Pearl River Fisheries
Research Institute (PRFRI) of Chinese Academy of Fishery
Sciences, whose preexistence was Guangdong Provincial
Fishery Institute founded in 1953, is located in the
southwest of Guangzhou city. It is a national fishery
research organization in Pearl River valley. There are
a total staff members of 210, including about 110 professional
technicians, of whom 8 are professors and 30 are associate
professors, 12 persons enjoy the government allowances,
one person was conferred chief scientist by Chinese
Academy of Fishery Sciences , 10 persons were appointed
to be supervisors for doctoral students or master students
by Shanghai Fisheries University and Zhanjiang Ocean
University. Since the founding of PRFRI, 89 scientific
achievements have been obtained and awarded. Among them,
the outstanding one was the artificial propagation techniques
for pond fish, which made a great contribution to the
development of fisheries in China.
The laboratories and research centers of the Institute
include Key Lab.of Tropical & Subtropical Fish Breeding
& Cultivation of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences,
Research Center of Commercial Aquatic Animal Disease
of Ministry of Agriculture, Guangdong Key Laboratory
of Aquatic Animal Immune Techniques, Aquatic Laboratory
Animal Research Center and National Fishery Environment
Field Research Station for Pearl River Estuary etc.
The research fields are focused on application basic
research and applied technique research for tropical
and subtropical fishery. At present, PRFRI is taking
on about 100 research programs, including national key
tasks in science & technology, the national high-tech
research and development program (863 program), national
fund for natural science and other projects of the Ministries
and the local governments.
Some government
technique supervision, technique consultation and technique
spreading organization are supported by PRFRI, they
are Fishery Strain Quality Supervision Inspection &
Testing Center (Guahgzhou) of Ministry of Agriculture,
Fishery Environment Monitoring Center of Pearl River
Valley of Ministry of Agriculture, New Fish Drug Clinic
Examination Center (Guahgzhou) of Ministry of Agriculture
and Guangdong Fishery Productivity Center.
For better transformation
of science and technology achievements, different middle-scale
test bases, as well as some experimental farms and factories
had been set up. They are Fishery Selective Breeding
Experimental Base, Guangdong Provincial Fresh Water
Commercial Fish Conservation Center, Aquatic Laboratory
Animal Breeding and Culture Base, as well as Fishery
Pharmaceutical Factory and Fishery Vaccine Workshop
etc. All of above are favorable to transformation of
scientific achievements.
Since its founding,
PRFRI has insisted on applying science and technology
to prosper fishery, marching with time, gaining momentum
from the reform. It will gain more research achievements
and make much greater contribution to fishery science
and technology development.
